FAQ

Newmarket paving questions

What areas near Newmarket do you serve?

We work in Newmarket and nearby communities including Yonge Street, Davis Drive and Main Street. If you're close by and not listed, ask — we can usually help.

When can I drive on new concrete or asphalt?

Fresh asphalt is usually ready for cars in a few days, sooner in cool weather. Concrete typically needs about a week before passenger vehicles and longer for heavy trucks.

How much does a concrete or asphalt driveway cost in Newmarket?

Price depends on size, removal of the old surface, base depth, finish and access. We measure on site and give a written, itemized quote — no guesswork pricing over the phone.

How long does a new driveway take in Newmarket?

Removal, base and paving for a typical asphalt driveway is usually one to two days. Concrete takes a similar time to pour, then needs several days of curing before cars drive on it — we give you the exact timeline in the quote.

Can you replace interlock with concrete?

Yes. We remove the pavers and bedding, correct the base and pour a concrete driveway or walkway, with a decorative finish if you want one.

Driveway widening or a new curb cut may need a municipal permit; we tell you early if your Newmarket job needs one.

Freeze-thaw cycles and road salt are hard on paving here, so we use air-entrained concrete, a deeper compacted base and recommend sealing.

Permits & locates

Before we dig in Canada

  1. Underground utilities are located through Ontario One Call before any excavation in Newmarket — it's free and required.
  2. Widening a driveway, adding a curb cut or working in the city boulevard in Newmarket usually needs a municipal permit; we confirm before scheduling.
  3. Grading must keep water moving away from foundations and neighbouring properties, so drainage is designed into every job.

Guide

Newmarket homeowner & property guide

How thick should a driveway be?

For a residential concrete driveway, 4 inches of concrete is the usual minimum, with 5–6 inches where heavier vehicles park, on a compacted granular base of roughly 6 inches or more. Asphalt driveways are commonly 2–3 inches of hot-mix over a similar compacted base. Soil, drainage and the vehicles you own in Newmarket decide the exact build-up, and we spell it out in the quote.

Is blacktop the same as asphalt?

Mostly, yes. "Blacktop" is the everyday word for asphalt pavement. Technically both are a mix of stone aggregate and bitumen; blacktop is sometimes used for the hotter, finer surface mix used on driveways and lots, while heavier asphalt mixes go on roads. For a home driveway in Newmarket, the terms describe the same thing.

Asphalt vs concrete vs interlock pavers — which lasts longest?

Concrete typically lasts longest with the least upkeep when it is reinforced, jointed and built on a proper base. Asphalt is cheaper and quicker, flexes with frost and is easy to patch, but needs sealcoating every few years. Interlock pavers look great and individual stones can be replaced, yet they shift and weed over time if the base and edge restraints are poor. In Newmarket, the base matters more than the surface: any of the three fails early on a thin base.

Do concrete contractors work on small jobs?

Yes. Small jobs — a few steps, a landing, a walkway section, a pad for a shed, AC unit or hot tub, or a short sidewalk repair — are common across Newmarket. They are quoted the same way as bigger work: measure, scope and a written price. Bundling small repairs together, or with a larger driveway or patio job, usually lowers the cost per square foot.
