FAQ

St. Catharines paving questions

What happens before digging starts?

Underground utilities are located first through the local one-call service, the layout and grades are confirmed, and access and parking are arranged so the work goes smoothly.

When can I drive on new concrete or asphalt?

Fresh asphalt is usually ready for cars in a few days, sooner in cool weather. Concrete typically needs about a week before passenger vehicles and longer for heavy trucks.

Should I seal my driveway?

Sealcoating asphalt every few years slows drying and cracking. Sealing concrete helps it resist water and de-icing salt. We recommend a schedule based on your surface and exposure.

Can you replace interlock with concrete?

Yes. We remove the pavers and bedding, correct the base and pour a concrete driveway or walkway, with a decorative finish if you want one.

Can you repair my driveway instead of replacing it?

Often, yes. If the base is sound, crack filling, patching or an overlay can add years. If the base has failed, repairs won't last, and we'll tell you that up front.

Niagara Region

Properties in St. Catharines

Downtown St. CatharinesPort DalhousieGlenridge

Most paving problems in Downtown St. Catharines, Port Dalhousie and Glenridge — cracking, heaving, pooling water — trace back to a thin base or poor drainage, so that is where every job begins.

Commercial work around Niagara Region adds line painting, catch basin repairs, accessible parking and phased paving so the property stays open.

Freeze-thaw cycles and road salt are hard on paving here, so we use air-entrained concrete, a deeper compacted base and recommend sealing.

Guide

St. Catharines homeowner & property guide

How thick should a driveway be?

For a residential concrete driveway, 4 inches of concrete is the usual minimum, with 5–6 inches where heavier vehicles park, on a compacted granular base of roughly 6 inches or more. Asphalt driveways are commonly 2–3 inches of hot-mix over a similar compacted base. Soil, drainage and the vehicles you own in St. Catharines decide the exact build-up, and we spell it out in the quote.

Is blacktop the same as asphalt?

Mostly, yes. "Blacktop" is the everyday word for asphalt pavement. Technically both are a mix of stone aggregate and bitumen; blacktop is sometimes used for the hotter, finer surface mix used on driveways and lots, while heavier asphalt mixes go on roads. For a home driveway in St. Catharines, the terms describe the same thing.

How do I know if my driveway needs repair or replacement?

Hairline cracks and surface wear can usually be sealed or resurfaced. Wide, spreading cracks, potholes, sunken sections, heaving and water pooling against the house usually point to a failed base, and patching that will not last. If more than about a quarter of the surface is damaged, or the driveway is near the end of its life, replacement in St. Catharines is often better value than repeated repairs. An on-site look settles it.

Asphalt vs concrete vs interlock pavers — which lasts longest?

Concrete typically lasts longest with the least upkeep when it is reinforced, jointed and built on a proper base. Asphalt is cheaper and quicker, flexes with frost and is easy to patch, but needs sealcoating every few years. Interlock pavers look great and individual stones can be replaced, yet they shift and weed over time if the base and edge restraints are poor. In St. Catharines, the base matters more than the surface: any of the three fails early on a thin base.
